Cabinets are never equal. They come in different types to suit certain locations and purposes. You can’t always find these cabinets in a single room due to space constraints and design restrictions. To form the perfect cabinetry for your kitchen or bathroom, you ought to understand what each one is all about.
Harbour View Kitchen and Bath discusses the main types of cabinets:
Base
Also known as lower cabinets, they provide the foundation for countertops. Generally, standard base cabinets are three feet tall and two feet deep. Their depth may reach up to 27 inches to hide more items out of view if your kitchen or bathroom has room for it.
Base cabinets aren’t installed atop the floor. They rest above a recessed riser, called toe kick, with a height of four inches. In contemporary home designs, cleats replace the toe kick for support, allowing the lower cabinets to “float”.
Wall
Otherwise called upper cabinets, wall storage units have no standard height since their dimensions adjust to the space available for them. By and large, they’re only one foot deep, extendable to 17 inches.
If you want a tall window backsplash for more light, a bigger view, and/or greater ventilation, your upper kitchen or bathroom cabinets will be higher. Harbour View Kitchen and Bath recommends rethinking your room design if you’re uncomfortable reaching them with a step stool.
Tall
A pantry staple, a tall cabinet is usually almost seven feet in height. Of course, you can have a shorter one if you don’t need the extra space. “Short” tall cabinets are accessible and free up more wall space.
Specialty
The logic behind specialty bathroom and kitchen cabinets is to cleverly maximize the square footage of your room for storage and organization purposes. They typically include wine-bottle racks, sink fronts and pullout drawers, but imagination is really the only limit.
